On June 26, at the United Nations headquarters in New York (USA), the UN Security Council Open Debate on Children in Armed Conflict took place with the theme "Effective Strategies to End and Prevent Serious Violations against Children" under the chairmanship of Ms. Vindhya Persaud, Minister of Services and Social Security of Guyana - the President of the Security Council in June 2025.

According to a VNA reporter in New York, speaking at the session were representatives of the United Nations Secretariat, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and representatives of more than 90 member countries, demonstrating the international community's high interest in this issue.

Presenting the latest report of the United Nations Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict, Special Representative of the Secretary-General Virginia Gamba highlighted that 2024 saw the number of serious violations against children with more than 41,000 cases, an increase of 25% compared to 2023 and the highest level since the UN monitoring and reporting mechanism on children in armed conflict was established in 2005.

Representatives of all countries expressed concern about the increase in serious violations against children, especially the number of cases of sexual violence and the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas.

Delegates called on all relevant parties to comply with international law and Security Council resolutions, strengthen preventive measures, promote international cooperation, provide humanitarian assistance, increase resources for child protection programs, and support the reintegration of children affected by conflict.

Speaking at the Open Discussion, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, affirmed that Vietnam condemns all acts of violence against children and calls for an immediate end to violations of children's rights in armed conflicts.

The Ambassador stressed that prevention must be a top priority, especially addressing the roots of conflict and minimizing the risks of violence against children.

Viet Nam promotes the integration of child protection into all stages of peace processes and considers it a central focus of peacekeeping operations.

On this occasion, Ambassador Do Hung Viet recalled Vietnam's important contributions related to children during its term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2020-2021, such as promoting the adoption of Resolution 2573 on protecting essential infrastructure for people in conflict, the Presidential Statement on overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines, and chairing discussions related to the protection of women and children in armed conflicts.

The Head of the Vietnamese Delegation proposed building an evaluation mechanism to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping; ensuring sustainable financing for UN peacekeeping operations and initiatives led by the African Union (AU).

The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam is ready to contribute more to the United Nations' peacekeeping efforts in Africa.
