On August 29, Tuyen Hoa Regional General Hospital, Quang Tri province, announced that it had just recorded a rare case of a fetus born with 6 umbilical cords wrapped around its neck.
Previously, at around 8:00 a.m. on August 29, pregnant woman TLN (born in 2005, residing in Dong Le commune, Quang Tri province) showed signs of labor at the 40th week of pregnancy.
At 3:00 p.m. the same day, the mother gave birth to a baby boy weighing 2.7 kg.
When the baby was born, the team was surprised to discover that the umbilical cord was wrapped 6 times around the baby's neck. The good news is that despite being wrapped around so many times, the baby's health is stable, with rosy skin and good breastfeeding.
Doctor Hoang Van Toan, Head of the Obstetrics Department, Tuyen Hoa Regional General Hospital, said that during a previous pregnancy examination, doctors discovered the umbilical cord wrapped around the fetus' neck.
However, test results showed that this condition did not affect the development of the fetus, so the pregnant woman was instructed to take care of her pregnancy at home, have regular check-ups, and be hospitalized immediately if there were any unusual signs.
"Although the ultrasound only showed the umbilical cord wrapped around 3-4 times, when the baby was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around 6 times. This is a rare case, because normally the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck many times can be dangerous for the fetus. Luckily, this time the baby was safe. After birth, the baby had rosy skin and suckled well; the mother N. also recovered quickly and her health was stable," Dr. Toan shared.
Doctor Hoang Van Toan said that the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck is not an uncommon phenomenon. According to medical literature, one in three babies are born with the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck, usually only 1-2 times. The case of a newborn with the umbilical cord wrapped 6 times like this time is very rare.
Doctor Toan recommends that pregnant women should have regular check-ups to promptly detect abnormalities that may affect the fetus, including the condition of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck./.
