Why do many teams at the FIFA Club World Cup receive less money than they actually should?

TPO - The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is about to come to an end and most of the $1 billion prize fund has been distributed. All participating clubs are satisfied with the huge amount of money they have received. However, in reality, the amount may be in deficit due to the instability of the dollar.

Real left the US after a 0-4 defeat to PSG in the semi-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. However, the Royal team can rub their hands with satisfaction after receiving a total of 82.3 million dollars after only 3 weeks of competition. Note that in the last season of winning the Champions League (2023/24), they only earned 91 million dollars.

This figure of $82.3 million is made up of $31 million fixed for qualifying for the 2025 Club World Cup, $4 million for two wins against Pachuca and RB Salzburg in the group stage, $1 million for a draw against Al Hilal, $7.5 million for the round of 16, $13.1 million for the quarter-finals and $21 million for reaching the semi-finals.

In the whole tournament, Real earned the third most money in the tournament, after the two finalists (PSG and Chelsea), while far outstripping the rest. Fluminense, who also reached the semi-finals, only received 63.6 million, compared to Bayern's 61 million, Man City's 54 million and Dortmund's 43.9 million.

PSG are currently the biggest earners with 113.7 million, followed by Chelsea with 111.4 million. Either team will receive nearly 12 million more if they win the final at MetLife Stadium on July 13.

Despite benefiting greatly from the world’s most lucrative tournament, teams using currencies other than the dollar could have received more. The U.S. dollar has lost 7.5 percent of its value against the euro since March 26, when FIFA announced how the $1 billion Club World Cup prize fund would be distributed, thanks to global economic uncertainty. At the time, the exchange rate was 0.925 euros to the dollar; this week, it was 0.855 euros to the dollar.

This means that with the $82.3 million paid, Real now only has 74.55 million euros, instead of 76.12 million as in March. The deficit is even larger compared to the beginning of the year, when $82.3 million was equivalent to 80.2 million euros.
