Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disorder of the digestive tract that causes abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, constipation and bloating.

Consuming certain foods has been shown to improve IBS symptoms in many people. For example, a Mediterranean-style diet, rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and nuts, has been shown to reduce IBS symptoms and improve overall health outcomes.

Reviews of many studies have revealed that 3 - 4 cups of coffee a day is good for overall health, according to the medical website News Medical.

Although there have been many previous studies investigating the association between coffee drinking and IBS, the results have been inconclusive and often confusing.

What did the new study find?

Researchers investigated the association between coffee consumption and the risk of IBS through a systematic review and meta-analysis of available studies on the topic.

A total of eight studies from Asia, Africa and the UK were included in the meta-analysis, involving 432,022 participants.

Results found that people who drink coffee regularly are less likely to develop irritable bowel syndrome than those who do not.

Research shows that consuming coffee in any amount or frequency reduces the risk of developing IBS later, according to News Medical.
