Australia announced a new defense strategy in April, aiming to invest heavily in the budget to strengthen its ability to respond to external threats.

Australia's deal to buy the new missiles, which the Canberra government calls a "significant milestone", will upgrade its naval capabilities in line with the vision of a new defence strategy to be released in 2024 to suit the new situation.

Australia has announced a $7 billion investment in the SM-6, a ship-based missile that can attack aircraft and cruise missiles, and the SM-2 Block III C medium-range missile with a new guidance system.

"Australia is facing the most complex geostrategic environment since World War II," AFP quoted Australian Minister for Defense Technology Pat Conroy during a working trip in Washington DC (USA).

Minister Conroy said the missiles would "keep Australians safe, deter any adversary and secure national interests in the missile era".

The missiles purchased from the US will be deployed on Australia's three Hobart-class destroyers and later on the Hunter-class anti-submarine frigates, according to information from the Australian government .

In April, Australia released a defense strategy that includes a sharp increase in defense spending to improve the country's military's ability to counter threats that could disrupt trade or block Australia's access to air and sea routes.
