Becoming the face of ending political deadlock, what did the new Prime Minister say when he was appointed?

On September 5, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Michel Barnier, a 73-year-old veteran politician , as the new Prime Minister.

According to AFP news agency, Mr. Barnier was born in 1951, is a member of the Republican Party representing the traditional right wing. Previously, he was best known internationally as the Chief Negotiator of the European Union (EU) for the process of the United Kingdom leaving the bloc, also known as Brexit.

Mr. Barnier has 40 years of experience in French and European politics. He has held various ministerial positions in France, such as Minister of Foreign Affairs , Agriculture and Environment. He has twice served as European Commissioner as well as Advisor to the President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen.

Mr. Barnier's appointment as France's new Prime Minister has helped end two months of deadlock in the process of forming a new government after the parliamentary (Lower House) election.

New French Prime Minister Barnier is tasked with forming a new government. He takes over from his predecessor Gabriel Attal, 35, who held the post for just eight months during France's recent political turmoil.

Speaking at his inauguration ceremony, Mr Barnier pledged to work with “people of good will” to promote respect and unity in a politically divided country, while stressing the people’s need for peace and stability.

He affirmed that the priority of the new government will be to focus on solving the challenges facing France, committed to listening to the aspirations and resolving the dissatisfaction of the people, as well as finding solutions to minimize the difficulties they are facing.

Mr Barnier's new government will focus on education, security and "immigration control", and will not shy away from but directly confront the country's difficult financial problems, especially public debt.

On the same day, on social network X , EC President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed France's appointment of Mr. Barnier as prime minister, affirming: "Mr. Michel Barnier always cares about the interests of Europe and France, as demonstrated by his many years of experience."

On the same day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also congratulated Mr. Barnier on his appointment as French Prime Minister. German Chancellor Scholz expressed his hope that the two governments will continue to cooperate to shape the Franco-German friendship for the benefit of the two countries and Europe.
