Ho Chi Minh City announces school opening and summer vacation schedule for new school year

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just officially issued a decision on the 2025-2026 school year schedule with school start dates for each grade level, summer and holiday breaks for each grade level.

Accordingly, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee stipulates the school start date, semester end date and summer vacation for the 2025-2026 school year for each level of education as follows:

• Preschool: Opening on September 5.
• Primary school: School starts on Monday, August 25, except for grade 1 which starts on August 20. Complete enrollment for grade 1 for the 2026-2027 school year before July 31.
• Secondary school: Back to school on Monday, August 25, except for grade 9 which will be back to school on August 20. Complete enrollment for grade 10 for the 2026-2027 school year before July 31.
• High school: Back to school on Monday, August 25, except for grade 12, back to school on August 20. Complete enrollment for grade 6 for the 2026-2027 school year before July 31.

All levels of education start on September 5. Semester 1 ensures 18 weeks of actual study, the rest is for other activities. Semester 2 starts on January 19, 2026, ensuring 17 weeks of actual study, the rest is for other activities. Summer break before May 31.

In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also stipulates that holidays and Tet holidays will be regulated by the Labor Law and guiding documents during the year. If a holiday falls on a weekend, it will be compensated on the next working day. School principals will proactively develop appropriate educational plans for their units according to regulations.

In the 2025-2026 school year, students in grades 1, 9 and 12 in Ho Chi Minh City will return to school on August 20.

According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, in the 2025-2026 school year, the city will have 2,528,789 students, an increase of 39,632 students compared to the previous school year. Of which, preschool has 478,458 students, primary school has 939,002 students, secondary school has 759,278 students, high school has 352,051 students.

In the new school year, the city is expected to put into use 1,287 new classrooms from the budget, including 151 for preschool, 585 for primary, 412 for secondary and 112 for high school. In addition, it is expected that about 200 preschool classrooms and 190 general education classrooms will be invested from socialized capital.

In the new school year, the city will continue to ensure that 100% of children living in the area have enough places to study, and ensure conditions for facilities and equipment to organize activities at educational institutions according to the requirements of the general education program.
