At the end of 2024, the world auto market witnessed interesting changes in the rankings of best-selling car models. Leading the way is the Toyota RAV4, a familiar urban SUV, with total sales of more than 1.18 million vehicles, only about 2,000 more than the Tesla Model Y in second place. A close chase between two names representing two generations: traditional internal combustion engines and modern electric vehicles.
RAV4 not only maintains stable sales, but also grew strongly by 11% compared to 2023. Meanwhile, Model Y, although still maintaining high performance, began to show signs of slowing down, down 3% compared to the previous year. This competition clearly reflects the shifting trend of the market, where electric vehicles are increasingly important, but traditional vehicles are not yet easily replaced.

Third place belongs to Toyota Corolla Cross, a global C-SUV model with sales of nearly 860,000 units, up 18%. This is also the model with the strongest growth in the top 10, thanks to positive reception in many emerging markets. Following closely behind is Honda CR-V with more than 854,000 units, maintaining the traditional appeal of a family SUV.
Toyota continues to dominate with the presence of familiar names: Corolla (5th), Hilux (6th) and Camry (8th). Although sales of some models show signs of decline, the company still occupies half of the rankings, something no other brand has achieved. Durability, stability and a diverse product portfolio are the factors that help Toyota maintain its position on the global automobile map.
In the second half of the rankings, the Ford F-150, a typical representative of the American pickup line, climbed to 7th place, surpassing the Camry thanks to sales of nearly 595,000 vehicles. The Tesla Model 3 held on to 9th place with 560,000 vehicles, a 10% growth, proving that electric sedans still have great appeal alongside SUVs. Meanwhile, BYD Qin, the only Chinese model to make the top, closes the list with more than 502,000 vehicles, continuing to take advantage of the strength of the domestic market.
Notably, no Korean models made it into the top 10 this year, despite Hyundai and Kia previously maintaining a presence in some regions. This could be a sign of increasingly fierce competition, especially as the global market is witnessing a strong rise of Chinese cars and a steady acceleration of electric car manufacturers.
Overall, 2024 is a pivotal year where the shift between tradition and modernity in the auto industry becomes clearer than ever. Toyota remains the "steadfast mountain" with a comprehensive product range, while Tesla and BYD show the potential to dominate the future. Change will not come overnight, but the race is certainly heating up every day.
