The message from the BRICS leaders is a strong affirmation of the increasingly important role of emerging economies in shaping the global future, towards a fair world order that is not dominated by local interests, in the context of the world facing major challenges such as the climate crisis, pandemics and deepening divisions between countries.
In a session titled “Strengthening multilateralism, economic-financial issues and artificial intelligence”, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called on BRICS leaders to lead reforms: “Faced with the resurgence of protectionism, emerging countries must defend the multilateral trade model and reform the international financial architecture. BRICS remains the guarantor of a promising future. There can be no prosperity in a world of conflict. Ending the wars and conflicts that are brewing is one of the responsibilities of heads of state and government.”

At this year's BRICS Summit, China sent Premier Li Qiang to attend. Sharing the same views with the host country's President, Premier Li Qiang said that BRICS countries should strive to become pioneers in promoting global governance reform, calling on the bloc to safeguard world peace , and promoting peaceful resolution of disputes.
In his speech at the conference held online, President Vladimir Putin said that the world is undergoing drastic changes. Accordingly, the Western model of liberal globalization has become obsolete. Business activities are now shifting to developing countries, creating a strong impetus for their economic growth.
“We all see that fundamental changes are taking place in the world. The unipolar system of international relations that served the interests of the so-called “golden billionaires” is becoming a thing of the past. It is being replaced by a fairer, more multipolar world. The process of changing the world economic order continues to develop strongly. Everything indicates that the liberal model of globalization has become obsolete. The center of business activity is shifting to developing markets.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Summit highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in global institutions, noting that the Global South is often the victim of double standards. Pointing to the historical neglect of two-thirds of humanity in institutions established in the 20th century, Prime Minister Modi argued that countries that have made significant contributions to the global economy are still not adequately represented at decision-making tables, undermining the credibility and effectiveness of these bodies.
This year's BRICS summit in Brazil takes place in a unique context: the first time new members are fully involved in formal activities after the bloc's enlargement in 2024. BRICS's expansion has added diplomatic weight to the summit, with the desire to represent developing countries across the Global South, intensifying calls for reform of global institutions such as the UN Security Council and the International Monetary Fund.
As planned, today's conference will continue its final day, focusing on discussing issues in the 6 priorities for the agenda of this year's BRICS conference, including: Global health cooperation; trade, investment and finance; climate change; artificial intelligence governance; reform of the multilateral peace and security system; and institutional development in BRICS.
