An Extinction Rebellion activist has been arrested after spray-painting the facade of an Apple store on Fifth Avenue in New York City to protest the “climate hypocrisy” of major tech corporations.
The incident took place on July 6 during a protest organized by the environmental group Extinction Rebellion. Protesters spray-painted the words “Tim + Trump = Toxic” and “Boycott” on the building’s entrance, denouncing the relationship between the leaders of major tech companies and President Donald Trump.
In a press release issued after the event, Extinction Rebellion stated that the goal of the protest was to criticize the fact that technology company CEOs who supported the Paris Agreement on climate change agreed with Mr. Trump's policies, which are said to undermine environmental regulations and promote the use of fossil fuels.
The organization specifically targeted Apple CEO Tim Cook, who has said that fighting climate change is the “most urgent priority” of our time.
“In 2025, Tim Cook donated to Trump, who is leading the effort to reverse climate progress. This is a betrayal of both customers and the planet,” spokesman Miles Grant said.

Not only outside, two other Extinction Rebellion activists also stood inside the Apple store and loudly criticized the company's relationship with the Trump administration.
“Apple claims to be taking climate action, but continues to support those who deny the impact of fossil fuels on the Earth,” said an activist with Extinction Rebellion.
Beyond Apple, Extinction Rebellion is taking aim at the tech industry as a whole, warning that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to a surge in electricity demand. The group says that companies like Google and Microsoft are backing away from their previous climate commitments as they invest heavily in AI. A recent Google report found that the company’s carbon emissions will increase by 11% to 11.5 million metric tons in 2024, largely due to operations in its data centers.
