On August 26, the Frankfurt Regional Court (Germany) ruled in favor of environmentalists, concluding that technology giant Apple had misled consumers when advertising the Apple Watch as a "CO2 neutral product."
The panel of judges stressed that the advertisement was baseless and violated competition law.
Previously, Apple advertised the watch device online as “our first CO2-neutral product,” based on a eucalyptus-planting project in Paraguay to offset emissions.
However, the Frankfurt court said the lease for 75% of the project area was not guaranteed after 2029 and the company could not be sure of renewal.
The plaintiff, environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), hailed the case as a victory against "greenwashing."
“Storing CO2 in commercial eucalyptus plantations is limited to just a few years, which does not guarantee ecological integrity,” said Juergen Resch, head of DUH.
Apple has not commented yet and the ruling may be appealed./.
