Currently, ships entering and leaving seaports in the Mekong Delta region via the Hau River channel have a tonnage of about 10,000 DWT.
According to the Southern Maritime Safety Corporation, the navigation channel for large tonnage ships entering the Hau River has completed measuring some sections after dredging.
Specifically, within the scope of the survey of the bottom of the navigation channel, the dredging and maintenance of the sea channel section from navigation buoy No. 7 - 1030 m (breakwater area + 400 m) to navigation buoy No. "7" + 90 m, approximately 1.12 km long, 70 m wide, with a depth determined to be 6.42 m.
Currently, Can Tho Port has received cargo ships with a capacity of up to 20,000 DWT to reduce load entering and leaving the seaport.
For the Tat canal section, Quan Chanh Bo canal section and Hau river section belonging to the maritime channel for large tonnage ships entering Hau river after dredging, the current depth is 6.4m.
Ships navigating on the navigation channel for large tonnage vessels entering the Hau River are advised to base on the maritime announcement of the depth of the channel after dredging and maintenance to take safe navigation measures and comply with the dispatch of the Can Tho Maritime Port Authority.
Informing Giao thong Newspaper, Can Tho Maritime Port Authority said that the dredging project for large ships to enter Hau River still has a section that has not been completed. Therefore, the current section of the channel has not been officially announced for exploitation of the new depth.
The project to dredge the navigation channel for large-tonnage ships entering the Hau River is part of the 2024 maritime works maintenance plan of the Ministry of Transport (MOT), aiming to dredge the channel to a standard depth of -6.5m.
Recently, the second phase of the investment project to build a channel for large tonnage ships to enter the Hau River has also been completed. The project aims to build a deep channel for ships of 10,000 and 20,000 tons, reducing the load in and out of ports on the Hau River.
A leader of Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company informed that currently, ships entering and leaving the Mekong Delta region are mainly fully loaded ships of more than 6,000 - 6,500 DWT and partially loaded ships of 10,000 DWT.
However, there have been some ships carrying wood chips with a capacity of about 15,000 - 20,000 DWT reducing their load in and out of Can Tho port. However, the ships have to reduce their load quite a lot. Container goods still mainly have to use barges for transshipment.
"Up to now, there have not been many changes in cargo. Perhaps after the official announcement of the new depth of the channel, shipping lines can adjust their schedules to bring ships in appropriately," said the leader of Can Tho Port, adding that to ensure sustainability for large ships entering and leaving the port, in addition to stabilizing the depth of the shipping channel, there also needs to be stable cargo legs.
However, the current weakness in the Mekong Delta region (group 5 seaports) is that the cargo foothold is still poor, so there are not many large ships entering and leaving seaports in the region.
According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration, currently, ports in the Can Tho, Hau Giang, and Tra Vinh seaport areas are capable of receiving ships with a tonnage of up to 10,000 DWT with reduced load.
In the past 5 years, the number of ships entering and leaving the seaports of group 5 has decreased, but the volume of goods has increased.
Specifically, the number of ships entering and leaving the area will decrease from 23,345 (in 2019) to 22,220 (in 2023). The total volume of goods passing through seaports will increase from more than 16 million tons in 2019 to more than 18 million tons in 2023.
Along with this, the output of ships with excess tonnage entering and leaving seaports in group 5 region also increased significantly, from 118 ships (in 2019) to 152 ships (in 2023).
