Veterinary staff vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies in Thanh Long commune.
Mr. Le Dinh Khien in Hamlet 4, Thach Long Commune, said: “My family raises 2 dogs and 1 cat. Annual rabies vaccination is a contribution to ensuring safety for the family and the community. Therefore, when I heard the announcement and learned about the vaccination schedule of the hamlet, I proactively stayed home and locked up the dog, helping the veterinary staff to vaccinate more conveniently and safely.”
Thach Long commune currently has more than 1,000 dogs and cats raised in households. To proactively prevent and combat rabies, the work of vaccinating dogs and cats against rabies is always of interest to the local government and people, so the vaccination rate is always among the top in the district.
Vice Chairman of Thach Long Commune People's Committee Nguyen Van Tien said: "Before each vaccination, in addition to promoting propaganda to raise people's awareness of the responsibility to prevent and control rabies for livestock, the locality also announces on the commune and village loudspeaker system about the vaccination plan and time for each village so that people know and proactively confine dogs and cats. At the same time, village officials also visit each household to check, grasp the number and send a vaccination commitment. During the vaccination process, the Commune People's Committee assigned the villages to send forces to support veterinary staff to ensure the work is smooth and safe. Therefore, in recent years, the locality has always had a rabies vaccination rate of 100%".
Other localities in the district are also interested in and promoting rabies prevention and control propaganda on the radio system and through village meetings. The authorities of communes and towns also set up teams to visit each household to check and request a commitment to participate in rabies vaccination for dogs and cats. On that basis, plans are developed and the number of dogs and cats to be vaccinated is summarized closely to reality. During the vaccination process, communes assign security forces and village chiefs to participate and support veterinary staff. Thanks to that, the rate of rabies vaccination for dogs and cats in the district every year always reaches 100% of the subjects to be vaccinated.
Director of the Agricultural Service Center (DVNN) of Thach Thanh district Hoang Van Hung said: "Currently, the total number of dogs and cats in the district is 13,930, raised scattered in residential areas. Vaccination against rabies for dogs and cats is identified as an important task. Every year, the District People's Committee directs the center to coordinate with localities to organize vaccination work well. The District Service Center and localities have completed the first round of rabies vaccination (from March 10 to April 20, 2025) for dogs and cats. In general, the organization of rabies vaccination for dogs and cats has been seriously and effectively implemented by localities and people, with a vaccination rate of 100%".
According to Mr. Hung, in the coming time, vaccination for livestock in general and dogs and cats in particular will face difficulties because the commune-level veterinary system (part-time staff) will stop working from July 1, 2025. However, promoting the achieved results, specialized units and local authorities will continue to promote propaganda, recommending that people absolutely not be subjective or negligent in rabies prevention and control; proactively vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies. When bitten by a dog or cat, it is necessary to go to a medical facility immediately for examination and consultation, vaccination, and full and timely infusion of rabies serum."
