After stumbling 0-3 against the Philippines in the opening match, the Vietnamese team recovered after a three-game victory over their "youngest" opponent, Cambodia.
The challenge did not stop there because in the match on the evening of July 11, coach Tran Dinh Tien's team had to face a tough opponent, Thailand, the reigning champion of the tournament.
Vietnam team regrettably lost the first game against Thailand
Thailand's two opening victories made the Vietnamese players' mentality even heavier against such a strong opponent when the two sides entered the confrontation at Icolod Sur Stadium in Candon City (Philippines).
With their backs against the wall, Nguyen Ngoc Thuan and his teammates had a great match, defeating the defending champions after four unexpected games. In the opening game, the Vietnamese team started quite impressively thanks to their solid defense and first-step control, creating confidence for the attack.
Continuously leading, but at the end of the game, the Vietnamese team could not maintain the game, allowing Thailand to score a very long streak to take the lead 23-20. The tug-of-war only ended with a score of 31-29 in favor of the team from the Land of the Golden Pagoda.
Vietnam team came back to win three games, defeating Thailand
The second game saw a strong comeback from the Vietnamese team when Ngoc Thuan and his teammates quickly created a 3-point gap over Thailand. The team did not make the same mistakes as before and won 25-22 to tie the score after two games.
Building on the momentum, the Vietnamese team continued to win and continuously defeated Thailand in the next two games with scores of 25-18 and 25-20. Attackers Ngoc Thuan and Duy Tuyen, along with an impressive Quan Trong Nghia, completed an unbelievable comeback against their arch-rival Thailand.
The second consecutive victory brought Vietnam to second place in the table, right behind Thailand. The match with Indonesia on the afternoon of July 12 will decide the ranking of the Vietnamese team after week 1 of the SEA V-League 2025. Hopefully, the successful comeback against Thailand will create more strength and confidence for the Vietnamese team in the final match.
