Wolfoo wins lawsuit against Peppa Pig, gets exclusive protection in EU

After more than 3 years of legal dispute with the entertainment corporation that owns the Peppa Pig character, the Vietnamese cartoon brand Wolfoo has been officially granted exclusive protection by the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in all members of the European Union (EU).

Born in 2018, Wolfoo with its outstanding growth rate on the fast entertainment platform YouTube, has quickly become a friend of children around the world with outstanding achievements in Diamond, Gold, Silver button boards as a testament to the popularity of this cartoon character.

The legal battle began in 2019, when Sconnect, then a startup with less than 100 employees, was repeatedly asked by eOne (now part of Hasbro) to transfer Wolfoo, accusing it of copying Peppa Pig. After Sconnect refused and offered to negotiate, eOne filed lawsuits in many countries such as Russia, the UK and the EU, causing heavy losses in costs, human resources and brand reputation.

So far, legal rulings have shown that international law is on Wolfoo's side. In Russia, the Moscow Court dismissed all allegations and ordered eOne to compensate Sconnect for legal costs. In the UK, although eOne repeatedly amended the lawsuit and prolonged the case, it failed to provide clear evidence, causing the lawsuit to fall into a deadlock. This way of amending the lawsuit is a sign of a "delaying" tactic to prolong the case, avoiding unfavorable judgments for the Peppa Pig owner, such as the risk of paying huge legal costs.

In late 2024 and early 2025, the Wolfoo brand was officially granted protection by the EUIPO in 27 EU countries for both the word mark and the character image. The EUIPO rejected all objections from eOne and Hasbro, and ordered the two corporations to compensate Sconnect for all litigation costs. This victory was the result of more than 1,200 days of litigation, with the Sconnect legal team led by MSc. Pham Van Anh, steadfastly confronting nearly 20 British lawyers.

Despite consecutive failures in lawsuits, eOne and Hasbro continue to engage in unfair competition and avoid legal responsibility. Recently, Sconnect sued eOne at the Hanoi People's Court for impersonating the owner to copyright the Wolfoo video , and abusing intellectual property rights to cause damage to competitors. Sconnect also filed a second lawsuit for infringement of the famous Wolfoo trademark, when eOne intentionally used the keyword "Wolfoo" in Peppa Pig promotional content to deceive viewers. The court is currently handling both cases.

Sconnect is a young corporation operating in the field of content creation and entertainment, pioneering the production of 100% “Make in Vietnam” animated films. The company currently has 3 animated films in theaters: Wolfoo & The Mysterious Island (2023), Little Trang Quynh: The Legend of the Taurus (2025) and Wolfoo & The Race of the Three Realms (2025). In 2026, Sconnect plans to release Ceramic Warriors: Blank Blank , the first stop-motion film using clay animation technology in Vietnam.
