Landslide in Northern Railway Tunnel

Báo Giao thôngBáo Giao thông21/05/2024

At about 10:15 a.m. on May 21, while workers were repairing the Chi Thanh railway tunnel (tunnel 17 - Km 1168+555 - Km 1168+880) in the La Hai - Chi Thanh section (Tuy An district, Phu Yen province), suddenly a mass of about 20m3 of rock and soil from the top of the tunnel continuously slid down, lying haphazardly on the railway section through the tunnel.

Many workers were present at the scene, approaching the landslide site. However, due to the difficult terrain, the recovery work was mainly done by manual dredging, taking turns.

Chi Thanh railway tunnel through Phu Yen collapsed.

Mr. Le Quang Vinh, Director of Phu Khanh Railway Exploitation Branch, said that due to heavy rain in Phu Yen province in recent days, rainwater seeped into the soil and rocks, causing soil and rocks on the tunnel ceiling to fall down.

"The Chi Thanh railway tunnel is currently under construction and renovation, so the incident did not cause any damage to the train. Authorities are urgently working to fix the problem," said Mr. Vinh.

Mr. Pham Nguyen Chien, Director of Phu Khanh Railway Joint Stock Company, said that the unit is mobilizing all workers and equipment from neighboring railway teams to participate in the repair work.

In addition, Project Management Board 85 (project investor) together with engineers and technical team are conducting inspections and assessments of the situation to propose specific remedial measures.

"We are committed to mobilizing maximum forces and necessary means to quickly fix the problem, ensure worker safety and soon return traffic to normal," said Mr. Chien.

Previously, on April 12, 2024, a landslide at Bai Gio tunnel (in Dai Lanh commune, Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province) caused the North-South railway traffic to be interrupted for 10 days. The incident caused Vietnam Railways Corporation to lose 50 billion VND to fix the problem and transport passengers by road.
