It was the poetry night “Poems that shape the country ” directed by the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People’s Army, coordinated by the Army Literature and Arts Magazine and the Oriental Development Research Institute. This was also one of the cultural and artistic activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2.
1. During my time as a journalist and up to now, I have often been involved in building temples, finding graves and organizing spiritual cultural events related to martyrs. And my personal experience is that every time we start or inaugurate these spiritual works, the sky is often covered with dark clouds and pouring rain. At those times, whether we are on the cloudy Truong Son peak or in the middle of the flooded Dong Thap Muoi , we always set up altars for the heroic martyrs.
In front of the altar, we sent our prayers to you, that when the opening ceremony is broadcast live, please help stop the rain so that our compatriots nationwide and our compatriots abroad can fully witness the meaningful cultural event to pay tribute to those who have contributed to the country. And almost every time, when the program starts, the rain stops, I remember that was the inauguration of the martyrs' temples in Long Khot (Tay Ninh province); Long Dai ( Quang Binh province), Ka Rong (Quang Tri province); Ngoc Hoi (Quang Ngai province); Rung Sac (HCMC)...
In mid-August, before the opening of the poetry night Poems that shape the country (script: People's Artist Cao Huu Nhac; Director: People's Artist Huu Tu), held on the coast of Tuy Hoa (Dak Lak province), near Vung Ro bay - where more than half a century ago the "numberless ships" supporting the revolution in the South docked, the sky suddenly turned dark and it started to rain. The heavy rain made the program organizers restless, if the rain continued, the poetry night was at risk of being canceled.
Colonel - writer Nguyen Binh Phuong, Editor-in-Chief of the Army Literature Magazine and Colonel - writer Trinh Quang Phu, Director of the Oriental Development Research Institute, the organizers of this event, could not help but feel anxious. Writer Nguyen Binh Phuong said as if to reassure himself: “Sun and rain are the work of heaven/ Tears for friends of people today…”.

I followed the old custom, standing in front of the sea and praying to my comrades: “Comrades, please support us, so that the rain will stop falling, so that comrades and compatriots can enjoy a night of poetry in memory of you, the outstanding children who sacrificed for the Fatherland, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Uncle Ho reading the Declaration of Independence”. Strangely enough, at exactly 8:00 p.m., when the live program began, the rain stopped, the wind stopped struggling, there was only the sound of the waves murmuring like the words of the ancients.
2. That night's poetry night was full of emotion, the poems touched the hearts and brought tears to many viewers. For nearly 2 hours, famous artists: People's Artist Tu Long, People's Artist Hong Hanh and artists of Sao Bien Art Troupe... sent to the audience the poignant poems that have accompanied the years of poets of the Ho Chi Minh era such as: To Huu, Nguyen Dinh Thi, Chinh Huu, Huu Loan, Huynh Van Nghe, Nguyen Khoa Diem, Pham Tien Duat, Nguyen My, Nguyen Duc Mau...
A student from Phu Yen University told me in tears: “I have read these poems before, but today, in this space, listening to the verses again, I am more deeply aware of the value of independence and freedom that generations of our ancestors sacrificed and devoted so much to achieve. I feel more and more the path that we will continue on, the path that Uncle Ho and our predecessors have chosen.”
The poetry night ended, we, the soldiers of the past, the artists, the audience sat together, reading new poems to each other, telling each other stories of memories. I turned to talk to Colonel - writer Trinh Quang Phu, who contributed to the poetry night, that this poetry night should be called the "Tu Thuy" poetry night.
The first water is a poetry night taking place right next to Vung Ro Bay, a historical place. The second water is a stage designed right on a crescent lake, similar to the way ancient poets met to watch the moon and recite poems. The third water is the "forest rain and sea storm" before the program begins, although it causes a lot of anxiety, it also helps to clear the hot air and clean the sky. And the fourth water is the tears of both the performers and the audience when the poems that have gone through the years have reminded us of the heroic and glorious memories, soaked in the blood and bones of many generations.
Hearing that, People's Artist Tu Long, who performed the poem "Soul flies up to become the national spirit" in the poetry night, suddenly spontaneously hummed the verses that he had just performed on stage, verses that somehow seemed to fit the atmosphere tonight, where the Tuy Hoa sea waves were murmuring outside: "Tears of the sky or tears of the living/ The sound of bells and drums echoing from the temple/ And my comrades chatting all night long...".
The poetry night "Tu Thuy" is so sacred!
