VietGAP dragon fruit production: Determined to implement in difficult situations

Lam Dong province currently has about 25,800 hectares of dragon fruit, with an annual output of 560,000 tons. Of which, up to now, the whole province has more than 9,235 hectares certified by VietGAP. Notably, in 2025, the province's target is 11,000 hectares certified by VietGAP, requiring high determination from the provincial agricultural sector and each locality.

Difficulty in implementation

At this time, the dragon fruit growing area of the province is in the harvest season, dragon fruit is in full bloom so the selling price is from 6,000 - 12,000 VND/kg (depending on the type). Some dragon fruit growers in Ham Liem commune said that for a long time, due to the erratic market for dragon fruit, they sold to traders without distinguishing between clean and normal dragon fruit. In addition, the weather affected productivity, so they "neglected" production according to VietGAP standards.

According to information from the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, in the first half of 2025, the province had 18 establishments that were due to re-certify VietGAP. However, these establishments did not register for certification. Therefore, the VietGAP certification codes of these establishments are no longer valid. In addition, the Center also did not conduct assessment and certification, because there were no establishments registered.

The leader of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center said that by the end of June 2025, the Center had monitored 27 facilities/882,196 hectares. The area of VietGAP dragon fruit in the province is currently more than 9,236 hectares. Meanwhile, the People's Committee of Binh Thuan province (old) has just approved the Program for producing dragon fruit according to VietGAP standards in 2025 in the province of 11,000 hectares. This requires great efforts from the agricultural sector, localities, and dragon fruit farmers.

Improve the quality of agricultural products

It is not difficult to understand the province's goal of achieving 11,000 hectares of VietGAP dragon fruit. This is a solution to continue improving product quality, ensuring food safety, serving domestic consumption and export requirements. The content of the VietGAP dragon fruit production program in 2025 is implemented in communes and wards growing dragon fruit in the province. The subjects of implementation are cooperatives, dragon fruit growing groups, enterprises, cooperatives, farms, households and individuals growing dragon fruit.

The Hoa Le Clean Dragon Fruit Cooperative (Na Boi village, Ham Thuan commune) is maintaining 10 hectares of GlobalGAP dragon fruit and 32 hectares of VietGAP dragon fruit. Mr. Do Thanh Hiep - Director of this cooperative said: The general goal of the cooperative is to protect the province's dragon fruit brand, although the current difficulty is that the price of VietGAP dragon fruit compared to dragon fruit produced without certification is still not different. However, the cooperative is having additional sales channels for some demanding markets, stable prices for GlobalGAP dragon fruit. On the other hand, clean and safe production is an inevitable trend to maintain clean raw material areas for the brand and input for processed dragon fruit products of the cooperative.

According to the plan of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, in July and the last months of 2025, the unit will organize supervision of establishments that still have VietGAP certification according to regulations. At the same time, propaganda will help people understand the importance of production according to VietGAP standards, support and guide people in production... On the other hand, in the context of some localities, old agricultural officers are replaced after new communes come into operation, new officers cannot promptly grasp the current situation of dragon fruit production as well as knowledge about VietGAP processes. Therefore, the Center has a plan to allocate quotas to new communes after the district level is abolished and communes are merged. In addition, it plans to work with each locality to carry out inspections, maintain and advise establishments participating in production according to VietGAP standards, determined to implement in difficult situations.
