The group of soldiers, including 75 Guatemalans and eight Salvadorans, is tasked with strengthening security and combating armed gangs that have caused serious violence in Haiti. Interim President of the Presidential Council Leslie Voltaire, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime and US Ambassador Dennis Hankins welcomed the soldiers at the Port-au-Prince airport.

"They came to reinforce the Multinational Force in the fight against gangs and guns in the country," according to the Haitian government . El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, who has won widespread support for his crackdown on organized crime at home, has said he will be able to "fix" Haiti and that gangs there must be "eradicated." The indication could open up hope for an improvement in the escalating tensions in Haiti.

Criminal gang massacres civilians, Haitian prime minister goes abroad to ask for help

Haiti has been mired in a security crisis as gangs have gained control and violence has escalated since late 2024. Many areas have fallen into the hands of criminal groups, while a series of massacres has forced thousands of people to flee their homes. About 10 countries have pledged more than 3,100 troops to Haiti, but so far only a handful have been deployed. Haiti has also made efforts to crack down on gangs, but has failed to stop them from expanding their territory and increasing their activities. Meanwhile, the Haitian national police force has lost thousands of personnel in recent years, making the situation worse.
