Phu Quoc airport expansion cost over VND22,000 billion: Strategic preparation for APEC 2027 and tourism breakthrough

The Government's approval of the investment policy to expand Phu Quoc airport with a total investment of nearly VND22,000 billion is not only a technical preparation step, but also demonstrates a long-term strategic vision for developing the pearl island into a new tourism and economic center of Asia.

As Vietnam prepares for the APEC Summit Week 2027, one of the key strategic transport infrastructure highlights is the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport. As one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the country, and a venue for high-level diplomatic activities, Phu Quoc not only needs a large enough airport, but one that is also modern, smart and of international standards.

Airport expansion on unprecedented scale

According to Resolution No. 01/2025/NQ-CP issued in early June 2025, the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project was assigned toSun Group Corporation to implement in the form of complete socialization. The project has a scale of up to more than 1,050 hectares, double the current airport area, and is divided into two main phases. Of which, phase 1 will be completed in the second quarter of 2027, in time to serve international delegations attending APEC, while phase 2 will continue to be completed and upgraded until after 2030, with the goal of increasing the operating capacity to 50 million passengers per year by 2050 - a huge number compared to the current capacity of about 4 million passengers per year.

The main focus of the expansion project is the construction of two new runways meeting ICAO level 4E standards, allowing wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A350, Boeing 787 or 747. Along with that, the aircraft parking system has also been completely redesigned with more than 100 parking positions, of which 45 positions have telescopic seats for passenger service. This will help Phu Quoc to simultaneously receive many international flights from all over the world , including during the APEC 2027 Summit Week and the peak tourist season.

Upgrade your infrastructure to reach new heights

One of the most notable highlights of the project is the design of the T2 passenger terminal, which features the image of a phoenix spreading its wings, designed by CPG Design Company (Singapore) in collaboration with architect Steven Thor. The phoenix symbol not only evokes revival and prosperity, but also strongly declares that Phu Quoc is gradually asserting its position as a global coastal city. In addition, the VIP terminal, with its Italian-inspired design, designed by architect Marco Casamonti, will serve as a place to welcome heads of state, high-ranking diplomatic delegations, as well as organize bilateral and multilateral meetings within the framework of APEC. The architecture of the VIP terminal emphasizes solemnity, absolute security, and at the same time remains in harmony with the nature of the pearl island.

Not only expanding its scale, the new Phu Quoc airport is also expected to be one of the smartest airports in Vietnam. According to the applied "smart airport" model, passengers will only take 15 to 20 seconds to complete security procedures thanks to facial recognition technology, biometrics and digital data integration. The modern baggage handling system with Individual Carrier System technology allows for separate baggage handling for each item, increasing the speed of baggage return and minimizing errors. In addition, the underground refueling system also helps reduce emissions into the environment, protect the surrounding ecosystem and limit noise.

APEC 2027 - a lever for tourism beyond reach

All of the above preparations are geared towards APEC 2027, a major international event that Phu Quoc is honored to host. Not only the airport, but also ancillary projects such as the APEC international conference center, APEC boulevard, coastal ecological urban area and modern press center system are being urgently deployed. According to the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, this is a "strategic project" of turning point significance, both in terms of foreign affairs and having a great impact on the strategy of developing the marine economy, tourism and long-term investment for the pearl island.

In the first 6 months of 2025, Phu Quoc welcomed more than 4.4 million tourists, of which nearly 900,000 were international visitors. Compared to the same period last year, tourism revenue nearly doubled, reaching more than VND 21,600 billion. This is proof that Phu Quoc's tourism development potential is huge, but without synchronous infrastructure investment, the risk of "breaking the capacity ceiling" is entirely possible. Therefore, the expansion of Phu Quoc airport is not only a technical preparation step for APEC, but also a "golden door" opening a new era for Vietnam's tourism industry.

The project's construction progress is closely monitored by the Government and Kien Giang Province, with the cooperation of the people and businesses. In June 2025, all 11 households in the clearance area proactively handed over their land earlier than planned, demonstrate a high consensus for common development. This is a positive signal showing that the local community believes in the future and is committed to accompanying the State in the sustainable development of their homeland island.

In the overall picture of the country's development in the new period, Phu Quoc is emerging as an international connection center not only by sea and air, but also by the image of a friendly, modern and integrated tourist city. The expansion of the airport to international stature not only helps Phu Quoc prepare for APEC 2027, but also lays the foundation for a long-term future, where the pearl island rises to become a “bright star” on the global tourism and economic map.
