Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Gillian Bird

On the afternoon of June 16, at the Government headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received Australian Ambassador Gillian Bird on the occasion of the Ambassador's beginning his term in Vietnam.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received Ms. Gillian Bird, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated Ambassador Gillian Bird's experience and positivity since taking up her duties in Vietnam, believing that the Ambassador will contribute to further developing the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Emphasizing that Australia is one of Vietnam's important partners in the region with high political trust and a common vision on many issues, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister expressed his delight at the extensive and effective development of the bilateral relationship, in the context that Vietnam is determined to implement four important Resolutions of the Politburo, considered the "Strategic Quad" on reform, streamlining the apparatus, developing science and technology and digital transformation, and developing the private economy; hoping that Australia will continue to accompany and implement substantive cooperation, contributing to supporting Vietnam in achieving its set goals.

The Ambassador requested that in the coming time, he actively coordinate and maintain the development momentum of bilateral relations, especially maintaining the exchange of delegations at all levels, channels and localities of the two countries; periodically review the progress of implementing high-level commitments and agreements, including the Action Plan to implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the period 2024-2027. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister highly appreciated the effectiveness of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of defense and security, especially cooperation in the field of United Nations peacekeeping. Accordingly, the two sides will further strengthen cooperation in preventing transnational crimes and building population management data.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister emphasized that the Vietnam-Australia Economic Cooperation Enhancement Strategy is the foundation for economic cooperation. The two sides need to increase market opening and effectively promote free trade agreements to which both countries are members in order to soon bring two-way trade turnover to the target of 20 billion USD, as well as contribute to maintaining a rules-based free trade system and ensuring supply chains.

In addition to Australia's support for Vietnam in the field of climate change response and energy transition, towards the goal of zero net emissions by 2050, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister suggested that Australia continue to facilitate Vietnamese students to study and research, contributing to enhancing people-to-people exchange between the two countries.

Expressing her honor to take on the assignment in the context of the two countries' relations being in a very good period, with bilateral cooperation having developed strongly, effectively and evenly in all fields, Ambassador Gillian Bird conveyed the greetings of Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son, sincerely thanking the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for their attention and support for the relations between the two countries in general and for the Ambassador and the Australian Embassy in Vietnam in particular.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son believes that with her rich experience in diplomacy, Ms. Gillian Bird will make important contributions to promoting the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to continue to develop strongly, effectively and substantially.

In response to Vietnam's determination to make strategic breakthroughs, the Ambassador expressed his admiration and affirmed that Australia is always ready to support and accompany, emphasizing that Vietnam's success is Australia's success. The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam is a reliable partner, playing an important role in the region and Australia wishes to continue to consolidate and strengthen its partnership with Vietnam.

Agreeing with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister's opinion that the two sides need to turn high-level commitments into specific projects and practical cooperation actions, the Ambassador pledged to closely cooperate with Vietnamese ministries, sectors and localities to promote the fields, as well as prepare for upcoming high-level visits between the two countries.

Appreciating Australia's role, contributions and commitments to the Southeast Asian region, including the East Sea issue, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son encouraged Australia to strengthen cooperation with Mekong Sub-region countries to promote sustainable development.

The two sides agreed to support an approach based on international law, jointly contributing to peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the world.

On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister reiterated the invitation to Australian leaders to attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime in Hanoi in October 2025.
