While many studies on the effects of fruit juice on the risk of diabetes remain controversial, new research published in the British Journal of Nutrition may now "clear the name" of this beverage.
The study, led by Dr. Takeo Fujiwara, Department of Public Health , Tokyo Medical and Dental University (Japan), in collaboration with experts from many other universities in Japan, assessed the relationship between the amount of fruit juice consumed - such as orange juice, and the risk of type 2 diabetes, especially in people with a high genetic risk of this disease.

Drinking orange juice reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes
The study included 13,769 participants, aged 35–69. They completed a food frequency questionnaire, which included fruit juice consumption.
During the 9-year study period, 814 people developed type 2 diabetes.
The results found that drinking fruit juice - such as orange juice - may help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Surprisingly, drinking fruit juice, such as about 1 glass of orange juice (240 ml) per day, helps people with a high genetic risk of developing diabetes, significantly reduce their risk of the disease, compared with people who do not drink fruit juice, according to the medical news site News Medical.
However, the authors did not observe this effect in people without a high genetic risk for diabetes.
The researchers concluded: These findings show an inverse association between type 2 diabetes and drinking 100% fruit juice, such as orange juice, in people with a high genetic risk of diabetes. Meanwhile, people with a low genetic risk of diabetes did not show this benefit from drinking fruit juice, according to News Medical.
