Mr. Trump spoke to the press before leaving the White House on January 31.

CNN on February 1 quoted White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt as saying that President Donald Trump had grounds to say that the helicopter was flying too high in the collision with the passenger plane on December 29, killing 67 people.

"The president made that statement based on facts, because it was the facts and the information was relayed to him by the authorities who are overseeing the investigation into this horrific plane crash," Leavitt said.

"The president continues to be briefed by everyone in his cabinet about the incident, including the secretary of transportation, the secretary of defense, the National Transportation Safety Board," she added.

Tragic Plane Crash in the US: Who Does President Trump Blame?

Earlier on the social network Truth Social, Mr. Trump wrote that the US military Black Hawk helicopter "was flying too high" before the collision with the Bombardier CRJ700 on flight 5342 operated by American Eagle, a subsidiary of American Airlines.

Mr Trump's post came as The New York Times reported that the helicopter may have flown at least 800 metres off its approved flight path and higher than expected.

CNN cited flight tracking data showing the military helicopter flew 100 feet above its maximum permitted altitude and veered off its planned flight path along the east bank of the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan National Airport.

Authorities banned helicopters from flying near Ronald Reagan National Airport on January 31. The black boxes from both planes have been recovered. Officials said the bodies of 41 victims have been pulled from the river. The recovery of the wreckage will begin on February 1 and is expected to last a week.

Washington DC Fire Department Chief John Donnelly said 28 bodies have been identified and he hopes all victims will be found.
