Trump's comments have raised concerns that US policy toward Ukraine will change if he is elected president in November. In a podcast with Patrick Bet-David, Trump criticized Ukrainian leader Zelensky for not only failing to find peace with Moscow but also contributing to the conflict with Russia. During the campaign, the former president also frequently blamed Zelensky for soliciting and receiving billions of dollars in US military aid since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in 2022. "That doesn't mean I don't want to help him, because I love the Ukrainian people very much. But he shouldn't have had a war. It's a really pointless war," Trump said. Mr Zelensky presented his “winning plan” to end the fighting in a face-to-face meeting with Mr Trump in New York in September. They both described the meeting as friendly, but the Republican candidate’s public statements have suggested he could reduce aid to Ukraine if elected. Mr Trump has also suggested that Ukraine could cede some territory to Russia in exchange for a peace deal, a concession Kiev considers unacceptable.
