Ammunition depot explosion at Cambodian base, 20 soldiers killed

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said 20 soldiers were killed and several others injured after an ammunition depot at a military base in Kampong Speu province exploded.

On Facebook, Prime Minister Hun Manet said he was "deeply shocked" when he received information about the incident. The cause of the incident is currently unknown.

The Cambodian prime minister sent condolences to the soldiers' families and promised that the government would take care of their funerals as well as compensate the families of both the dead and the injured.

Images from the scene showed a destroyed building still smoldering and soldiers being treated in hospital.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. (local time) on April 27.

Kampong Speu provincial authorities have warned people to be extremely vigilant and stay away from the ammunition depot belonging to the 3rd Military Command, located in Chamkar Dong village, Chbar Morn commune, Chbar Morn city, Kampong Speu province, which is on fire.

Residents were evacuated and many injured were treated. Meanwhile, the police dispatched fire trucks to intervene and extinguish the fire.
