Many war invalids and veterans participate in acting in "Red Rain"

In a scene in the movie “Red Rain”, a wounded soldier, his legs amputated up to the knee, lies quietly in a basement filled with painful groans. These are real wounded soldiers in real life, no need for makeup to play the role.

That was one of the haunting scenes of the movie “Red Rain”. In the dark, stuffy basement filled with painful screams, Doctor Le (played by Hua Vi Van) was impatient because he had run out of anesthetic, while outside the enemy was fighting more and more fiercely, cutting off all our support lines.

In the bunker, wounded soldiers lay “layered like fish”. Groans could be heard everywhere in the stuffy bunker, which was getting more and more cramped. On a hospital bed, a wounded soldier whose legs had been amputated was lying quietly. This was not a scene filmed with makeup or using special effects, but the soldier lying on the hospital bed was a real wounded soldier from the Quang Tri battlefield in the past.

Right after the scene where the wounded soldier loses both legs is another haunting scene in “Red Rain”, when the infirmary runs out of anesthetic and Doctor Le (played by Hua Vi Van) is forced to amputate a soldier’s limb. Actor Hua Vi Van recounted that when the scene of amputating the limb ended, he and Hieu Nguyen “couldn’t stop crying”.

The film received support from many wounded soldiers with all kinds of injuries to help the film crew shoot realistic and emotional footage.

Returning to the old scene, once again, they devoted themselves to the country, contributing their own damaged bodies to the work telling their own historical stories to future generations, without the need for makeup or acting. They were here, contributing to the footage recreating the glorious past of the past, to once again be a little closer to their old comrades.

The appearance of these special actors makes the film a gateway between the past and the present, helping the actors to deepen their emotions, understand and appreciate more the images they are portraying about history and their ancestors.

At the press conference to launch the film in Ho Chi Minh City, actor Hua Vi Van was moved to share that he and the cast in the film do not see themselves as actors, but as soldiers on duty. Because “Red Rain” is not only a film, but also a stick of incense from the film crew to the souls of the soldiers who have fallen in the Citadel and the Thach Han River.

No one considered what “Red Rain” presented before their eyes to be a performance, because everyone implicitly understood that Squad 1 with Cuong, Ta, Binh, Hai, Tu, Sen and Tan or Battalion K3 Tam Son with Lieutenant Thanh, Political Commissar Tan and Doctor Le seemed to have existed in another form, a form that has become the tragic legend of the saying: “The ancient Citadel is wide but my friends are cramped”.

Director Dang Thai Huyen emotionally shared: “The veterans always arrived at the set very early, some on homemade three-wheeled vehicles. When filming 'Red Rain', the weather in Quang Tri was freezing cold, but they did not hesitate to lie still so we could put on makeup in very thin summer soldier uniforms, and then film for quite a while. In such cold weather, old wounds must have been painful. We truly admire the spirit of Uncle Ho's soldiers, and our hearts are always filled with gratitude to those who were willing to join us in reviving a page of our nation's history.”

Production director Kieu Thanh Thuy also shared the reason for inviting war veterans to participate in filming: “We have in mind that we must try our best to get the most authentic footage, so the film crew came up with the bold idea of inviting real war veterans to assist in filming. And fortunately, they helped us very enthusiastically. They not only participated in the film, but this was also an opportunity for the young cast of 'Red Rain' to meet real people and real events, helping them understand more clearly the characters and ideals of those who guarded the Citadel that year.”

The movie “Red Rain” is currently the highest-grossing movie in theaters, with an average daily revenue of over 20 billion VND in tickets, becoming a fever in theaters.

The tragic story of the Liberation Army soldiers who defended Quang Tri Citadel for 81 days and nights has become one of the most popular topics of this time.

The film received thousands of positive reviews and comments from audiences, especially young audiences. Many young audiences have also actively spread the values of the film on social media platforms.
