In order to prepare for the worst case scenario, the French strategist decided to call up midfielder Pham Van Luan of the Hanoi Police Club to the Vietnam national team.
The Police team also sent congratulations to player Van Luan: "Congratulations to midfielder Pham Van Luan for his tireless efforts over the past time."
Pham Van Luan was one of five players sent to Japan by Saigon FC on loan in early 2022. He played for Ryukyu Club in J-League 2 and played exactly two matches. In October 2022, Ryukyu was relegated.
After returning home, in July this year, Pham Van Luan was registered by the Hanoi Police Club to participate in the V-League. In the second phase of the 2023 V-League, the 24-year-old midfielder played all 7 matches, helping the police team win the championship.
In V-League 2023/24, Pham Van Luan played 7/8 matches for Hanoi Police Club. His efforts were rewarded with a place in the national team to prepare for the 2023 Asian Cup.
With the presence of Van Luan, the current number of players on the Vietnamese team is 35. However, the team list is likely to be disrupted when many players are injured and at risk of not recovering in time.
The Vietnamese team will gather in Hanoi on December 31, then travel to Qatar on January 5, 2024. Before playing the opening match of the 2023 Asian Cup, Quang Hai and his teammates will have a "rehearsal" match with Kyrgyzstan on January 9, 2024.
At the 2023 Asian Cup, Vietnam is in Group D with Japan, Iraq and Indonesia. The tournament starts from January 12 to February 10, 2024.
