Today, the Vietnamese women's team will enter the first match of the 2026 Asian Cup Women's Qualifiers against the Maldives at 7:00 p.m. at Viet Tri Stadium. This is also the first official match of the Vietnamese women's team since the friendly match with the Chinese women's team at the end of 2024.
In the 2026 Women's Asian Cup qualifying round, the Vietnamese women's team is in Group E with the UAE, Guam and Maldives. Because the results at the 2026 Women's Asian Cup will be counted as the basis for qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup, the 2026 Women's Asian Cup qualifying round is also considered the first qualifying round of the 2027 Women's World Cup for the Vietnamese women's team.
To prepare for this tournament, the Vietnamese women's team has been gathering since May and has had friendly matches with Werder Bremen Club as well as Japanese teams.
The opponent of the Vietnamese women's team on the opening day is the Maldives women's team, considered the weakest team in Asian women's football. On the FIFA rankings, the Maldives women's team is ranked 163rd and in Asia they are only above 4 teams: Saudi Arabia, Bhutan, Iraq and Macau (China).
Not only is the Maldives women's team weak, they also don't have many opportunities to strengthen themselves as the country does not have a women's national championship and the national team rarely gets to compete.
Therefore, a big win, even a very big win, is what coach Mai Duc Chung and his team are aiming for to have a smooth start in the 2026 Women's Asian Cup qualifiers.
Notably, in the past, the Vietnamese women's team won two very big matches against the Maldives, 14-0 and 16-0, which are also the matches that hold the record for the biggest wins of the Vietnamese women's team. Therefore, if coach Mai Duc Chung and his team can win by more than the above numbers, it will also be a new historical milestone for the Vietnamese women's team.
