Robusta coffee prices continued to rise again, thanks to the decline of the US dollar index (DXY) to its lowest level in nearly 3.5 years, triggering short covering activities in coffee futures contracts. At the same time, the strong appreciation of the Brazilian Real against the USD also contributed to limiting selling activities, helping Robusta prices maintain the upward momentum.
In contrast, Arabica coffee prices fell due to selling pressure from speculators on news of a bumper Arabica crop in Brazil and favorable weather forecasts for harvest in major coffee growing regions in Brazil. Last week’s frost in Parana state also caused minor damage but was not enough to change the overall market trend.
In addition, consumer spending in the US fell sharply in May, putting pressure on economic growth prospects and significantly affecting coffee demand.
