Green Hostel - Unique model from the heart of an 82-year-old woman

Located in Hamlet 4, Dao Thanh Commune, My Tho City ( Tien Giang Province), motel No. 101 owned by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy - an 82-year-old woman, wife of a martyr, has become a bright spot in the "green motel" model with unique and meaningful initiatives.

After 10 years of operation, the 80-room boarding house has become home to nearly 200 residents, mainly workers, students and pupils.

Challenges from waste and creative solutions

With an average amount of waste up to 200 kg per day and an increasing trend, plus the fact that the boarding house is located deep in the alley, making it impossible for specialized vehicles to access and collect it directly, Ms. Thuy has come up with the initiative to build a comprehensive and sustainable waste management system.

A highlight of the hostel’s waste management strategy is the sorting of waste at source. Organic waste is separated to be used as fertilizer for trees, while solid waste and plastic are collected for scrap metal sale on weekends. Notably, the proceeds from the scrap metal sale are put into a “piggy bank” – a unique initiative to motivate tenants to participate in sorting and processing waste.

To maintain motivation and encourage tenants to actively participate, the boarding house has built a diverse and attractive reward system. Every month, based on the results of the Tien Giang provincial lottery, a lucky boarding house will receive valuable prizes such as a juicer, a Panasonic oven or an Omo laundry detergent combo. After many years of implementation, more than 50 prizes have been awarded.

In addition, the hostel also annually offers 30 free tours to members with outstanding achievements in environmental protection. The selection of award recipients is carried out publicly and transparently through voting.

Community and environmental activities

"Green Sunday" is a special initiative of the hostel, where all members participate in cleaning and sweeping not only the hostel premises but also the surrounding area. Together, they plant trees, weed, collect trash and even plant water hyacinth in ditches to naturally filter wastewater.

One of the most notable features of the No. 101 hostel is its long-term plan for clean energy use. Through the accumulation of energy-saving activities and environmental funds, the hostel aims to install a 10kW solar power system within 36 months. This system is expected to provide about 20% of the total electricity consumption of the hostel, equivalent to 15kWh of free electricity per month for each room.
