The unpredictable harm when children use phones early

Research published in the Journal of Human Development and Competence (USA) shows that children who use smartphones before the age of 13 are at high risk of mental health problems. Specifically, girls are more susceptible to the effects, with symptoms such as anxiety, depression, difficulty controlling emotions and feeling detached from reality.

Notably, each year that children are exposed to phones at an early age, their happiness and psychological stability decrease. The main reason comes from using social networks too early, leading to sleep disorders, online bullying or family conflicts.

The results, based on a survey of nearly 2 million people from 163 countries, show that this is not a problem limited to any one region.

Social Media and Adolescence: Hidden Dangers

It's not just phones, social media is also a concern. Tara Thiagarajan, the lead researcher , recommends that parents wait until their children are 16 before allowing them to use these platforms.

The reason is that puberty is a sensitive period, and early exposure to social media can reduce life satisfaction later. Restructuring childhood by limiting technology will help reduce the risk of psychological disorders in adolescents.

Many parents worry that if they don’t let their kids have phones or social media, they will be isolated from their friends. But instead of facing this pressure alone, parents can work together to create a common agreement. Parents should also discuss their school’s policy on phone use on campus.

A school environment that limits technology devices will help children focus more on learning and real-life interactions.

If your child has used the phone, don't panic.

This study doesn’t mean that all kids who use phones early will have problems. If your child hasn’t shown any negative signs, talk to them about the potential risks.

Tell your child that some of their peers may struggle with emotions or self-esteem due to excessive phone use, and that support is available if they need it.

In case your child shows signs of anxiety or depression, seek help from a mental health professional. At the same time, parents can consider measures such as: Using a basic phone instead of a smartphone; Applying parental control tools; Limiting time spent on social networks.

If your child reacts negatively to restrictions, explain sincerely: "When we let our children use phones, we didn't know all the possible harmful effects. But now, scientists have proven that using phones too early is not good, so we need to adjust it."

This is not just a matter for families, but for society as a whole. Delaying smartphone and social media use is not easy, but it can be one of the most important decisions you can make to protect your child’s mental health.

Let’s start with open conversations and community consensus. A healthy and mentally healthy generation is the foundation for a better future.
