Soft drinks, drinks containing a lot of milk sugar
Dr. Elaine F. Kung, a dermatologist who graduated with honors in Biology from Yale University (USA), pointed out that glucose and fructose, which are often found in soda and soft drinks, will bind amino acids in collagen and elastin, creating end products of the glycation process, also known as AGE.
"The glycation process of amino acids makes it difficult to restore collagen and elastin fibers, contributing to wrinkles and causing the skin to lose water more quickly," the doctor analyzed.
The American expert advises against drinking drinks that are high in sugar or contain high-fructose corn syrup: "For example, soft drinks, don't drink a lot of sugar and other carbonated drinks because they are not healthy choices for the skin."
Dr. Cheryl Rosen, director of dermatology at BowTied Life, agrees with Dr. Elaine, adding that even diet sodas can contain “chemicals that are harmful to the body,” which can cause premature wrinkling and increased inflammation.
Bottled coffee
Coffee contains many antioxidants, when consumed properly, it can help keep your skin young and prevent aging. However, these benefits are not found in bottled/canned coffee.
When you make your own coffee at home, you can control what goes into it. In contrast, bottled coffee often contains additives, is high in calories, and contains a lot of sugar and milk.
This type of coffee is loaded with "sugar, sweeteners, and added fats," says Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, MPH , senior clinical nutritionist at UCLA Medical Center.
All of these factors are less than ideal for skin health, leaving skin dehydrated, dull, and can promote inflammation, accelerating the formation of wrinkles and crow's feet.
"These coffees are full of chemicals that can dry out and dehydrate the skin, especially when consumed daily," adds Nadir Qazi, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Chicago.
The caffeine in coffee may give you the boost you need for your day, but it doesn't have much pure caffeine and can strip your skin of its natural elasticity and glow."
To avoid this, both experts recommend trying black coffee or diluted black coffee, which gives you the ideal amount of caffeine to stay alert while being low in calories and still preserving antioxidants.
Energy drink
Dr Jose Mier, founder of the Heliotherapy Research Institute and skin health expert, warns that regular energy drink consumption can dehydrate the skin, especially the delicate eye area, leading to dark circles under the eyes and more wrinkles.
“These drinks force the brain to stay awake, leading to poor sleep and puffy eyes, which in turn makes the delicate skin under the eyes susceptible to hyperpigmentation and itching,” the expert explains.
Downstate Health Sciences University's Medical Director further notes that caffeine, commonly found in energy drinks, also inhibits the body's ability to remove fluid from tissues, including the tissues under the eyes, making them more prone to swelling and water retention.
