UNESCO experts highly appreciate the work of preserving and promoting the value of Thang Long Imperial Citadel

VHO - On July 22, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Vu Thu Ha received an interdisciplinary delegation from the UNESCO World Heritage Center and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) led by Director of Heritage Consulting Company Okello Abungu, Professor of Mauritius University, Mr. George O. Abungu.

Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Vu Thu Ha said that Hanoi has actively prepared survey conditions and arranged necessary supporting infrastructure to serve the research and renovation work of the central axis of the World Heritage Site of Thang Long Imperial Citadel.

During the implementation process, principles and methods were emphasized and Hanoi always had the support of central specialized agencies, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, the World Heritage Center of Thang Long Imperial Citadel...

Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Vu Thu Ha informed that Director of the World Heritage Center Lazare Eloundou Assomo came to Vietnam, visited and worked at the World Heritage Center of Thang Long Imperial Citadel in May 2025.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay also made a working visit to Vietnam, visiting the Thang Long Imperial Citadel World Heritage Center in June 2025, showing great interest in this heritage site.

Hanoi will focus all resources to seriously implement the recommendations of the World Heritage Committee in Decision No. 47 COM 7B.92 with the goal of completing and submitting the Report on the conservation status update of the Central Area of the World Heritage Site of Thang Long Imperial Citadel - Hanoi to the World Heritage Center before February 1, 2026.

The report includes a proposal to restore Kinh Thien Palace - the most iconic structure in the Thang Long Imperial Citadel heritage site, a typical space for people across the country to practice traditional rituals, reenact national history, and at the same time, arouse and spread the converging power of the culture that has been forged over thousands of years of history.

Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Vu Thu Ha assessed that the presence of the interdisciplinary working group at this time and accompanying Hanoi in completing the dossiers is very meaningful for the set goals of preserving and promoting heritage values.

"Hanoi is committed and determined to implement the contents of the proposed roadmap, according to the approved goals," Ms. Vu Thu Ha affirmed.

On this occasion, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Vu Thu Ha hopes to receive attention, support and listen to professional assessments from experts of the Interdisciplinary Working Group in this project.

At the reception, Mr. George O. Abungu - Archaeologist, Director of Okello Abungu Heritage Consulting Company, Professor of Mauritius University expressed his impression of the restoration projects of Thang Long Imperial Citadel, showing that Hanoi in particular and Vietnam in general not only invest in technology and finance, but also pay great attention to professional and human factors.

On this occasion, Mr. George O. Abungu thanked the Hanoi city government and Vietnamese experts for helping people increasingly understand the importance of UNESCO and the significance of the projects implemented by this organization.

According to Mr. George O. Abungu, the fact that the Thang Long Imperial Citadel heritage has many cultural layers buried in the same area is a big challenge, but also contributes to increasing understanding for research and restoration work globally, even changing thinking and awareness about heritage.

On behalf of the international expert team, Mr. George O. Abungu affirmed his readiness to cooperate with the city to achieve the set goals in the best way.
