According to initial information, heavy rains caused floods and landslides, disrupting traffic on a key highway near Chilas district, northern Pakistan. More than 200 local tourists were stranded, while several vehicles were buried under the rubble.
Rescuers have deployed heavy machinery to search for the missing. Military helicopters have also been deployed to evacuate people, including many women and children.
Days earlier, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority had issued a flood alert, advising people not to travel to northern areas due to the risk of landslides. Earlier this month, authorities had also warned of the risk of severe weather like the 2022 floods that submerged a third of the country and killed 1,737 people.
According to statistics, unusually high rainfall in Pakistan since June 26 has killed at least 225 people and injured more than 500 others. Experts say that climate change is increasing extreme weather events in the region.
