“Music played an important role in many ancient indigenous cultures, in ways we may not realize,” said Dr. Tanya Peres, a researcher in the Department of Anthropology at Florida State University. “Musical instruments have a long history in human societies and are encoded with meanings that go beyond their ability to produce sound.” Photo: @ Britannica. “The symbolism and belief in the sounds and melodies transmitted from rattles or percussion instruments made from turtle shells served to maintain rhythm, and thus infused powerful spiritual energy into ancient indigenous dances and rituals,” notes Dr. Tanya Peres. The presence of percussion instruments and rattles at this site demonstrates that turtle shells were important for keeping rhythm and ancient music in ceremonies throughout the prehistoric southeastern United States. "We need to continue to gather more evidence, and different perspectives, to have a deeper understanding of the relationship between humans and animals in the past," she said.
