While much of the world is wondering how Donald Trump's second term will play out, the village of Ollolai on the Italian island of Sardinia sees potential opportunity.

Like many rural areas in Italy, Ollolai has long tried to attract outsiders to reverse decades of population decline. One of its most attractive offerings is its dilapidated homes, which start at just 1 euro — or more than $1.

Following the results of the US presidential election on November 5, the Ollolai government launched a website targeting Americans who intend to emigrate because they are unhappy with the results, pledging to provide many cheap houses to invite these people to quickly buy vacant houses in the village.

“Are you tired of global politics ? Are you looking for a more balanced lifestyle while still ensuring new opportunities? It’s time to start your migration journey to Europe in the beautiful paradise of Sardinia,” the website advertises.

Ollolai's head of government, Francesco Columbu, said the website was created to appeal specifically to American voters after the 2024 presidential election. He said he loves America and believes Americans are the best people to help revive the Sardinian community.

“We really want and will focus on ‘Americans first,’” Columbu said. “Of course we welcome people from other countries to apply, but Americans will have priority in the fast-track process. We are betting on them to help revive the village. They are our trump card.”

Columbu said the village currently offers three types of accommodation: Free temporary homes for digitally savvy migrants, €1 homes in need of renovation, and fully furnished homes costing up to €100,000 ($105,000).

Over the past century, Ollolai’s population has dwindled from 2,250 to 1,300, with fewer children being born each year. Many families leave the village during hard economic times in search of work and a better life.

In recent years, the village's population has continued to decline, down to about 1,150 residents.

Ollolai is trying to attract new residents with attractive housing schemes. In 2018, the local government began selling vacant, rundown homes for just €1. It then continued a scheme to rent out vacant workspaces for a symbolic €1.

However, the revitalization plans have not progressed as the local government had hoped. Since 2018, only 10 houses have been sold to foreigners for 1 euro.

“The village is still very deserted. We have about 100 vacant houses. We will soon post pictures of these houses online for those interested to see,” Mr. Columbu said.

According to CNN , most of the vacant buildings are located in the historic center of Ollolai village and vary in size and style.

"These are picturesque houses of old farmers and shepherds, built with local granite. Some houses are even equipped with modern furniture and amenities ," CNN described.

Ollolai is the ideal place for those who want to take a break from modern life and enjoy a simpler life. The village is located on a pristine land where ancient agricultural traditions are still maintained. It has clean air, no pollution, little crowding and beautiful views.

Autumn is the time for cortes apertas, when ancient stables and taverns open their doors to the public, serving wine, cured meats, cheese and other delicacies. The area is famous for its Casu Fiore Sardo cheese.
