Barcelona "pocketed" 40 million euros with a 4-year sponsorship contract from the Democratic Republic of Congo. |
According to Reuters , this is an expense to promote tourism to the Central African country, with the campaign logo appearing on the Catalan football team's uniform.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Congolese tourism logo will be printed on the training and warm-up shirts of both the Barcelona men's and women's teams, as well as appearing in promotional materials, the club magazine and the annual report. The sponsorship is worth between €10 million and €11.5 million per season, depending on the financial year.
Although it is a curious thing, this is not the first time that the Democratic Republic of Congo has used European football as a "springboard to promote the national image". Previously, they also joined hands with AS Monaco and AC Milan. According to confirmation from Congo's Sports Minister, Mr. Didier Budimbu, Monaco receives sponsorship at the rate of 1.6 million euros/season, while AC Milan enjoys a package worth up to 14 million euros.
Partnering with a football giant like Barcelona is a bold strategic move for Congo, as the country seeks to boost tourism and foreign investment. For Barca, the deal continues to be part of a policy to maximize commercial value off the pitch.
Barcelona’s move to attract investment is becoming increasingly important as the Camp Nou club continues to struggle financially following the pandemic. The deal is of strategic value to both parties and is a new model for global sponsorship trends in modern football.
