According to RT, Russian Foreign Ministry mobilized Maria Zakharova talked about the reason why Mr. Zelensky wanted to meet directly with Russian President Putin. In an interview with First Sevastopol TV broadcast on July 5, when asked why she thought Mr. Zelensky was so determined to meet Mr. Putin, Ms. Zakharova replied: “Because he (Zelensky) needs to confirm his legitimacy, not through legal procedures, but by any other means to prove that he is still in power.”
According to Ms. Zakharova, Mr. Zelensky also wanted to meet President Putin because he was haunted by "a terrible fear of being forgotten".
“He is extremely afraid of being forgotten, afraid of becoming unnecessary for the West, and afraid that the West will somehow marginalize him,” Russian Foreign Ministry reinforced Maria Zakharova.
Earlier in May, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said a meeting between Mr Putin and Mr Zelensky could take place, but only after talks between Moscow and Kiev reached "concrete agreements".
