The Drel glide bomb is among Russia's newest weapons, capable of flying independently by gliding to a target at a long distance, and detonating above the target "at the right moment," according to TASS today, January 10.
"To date, the bomb family has completed all necessary types of testing," TASS quoted an unnamed representative of the Rostec Corporation as saying, adding that the first batch of bombs will be produced in 2024.
Drel is designed to destroy armored vehicles, ground radar stations, power plant control centers and air defense missile systems.
Military observers say Russia's new line of glide bombs is also designed to be jam-proof and avoid radar detection.
Russian and Western sources say Drel is a type of cluster bomb.
More than 100 countries and territories have signed the treaty banning cluster munitions. Ukraine has received cluster munitions from the US but has pledged to use them only against Russian forces. Kyiv has also accused Moscow of testing Drel bombs in Ukraine.
TASS quoted a Rostec representative as saying that information about the use of the new bomb in Ukraine is a top secret matter. Russian President Vladimir Putin said last July that Russia would use cluster bombs in Ukraine if forced to do so.
According to Rostec, in case the Drel bomb fails to detonate at the predetermined target, the bomb will automatically switch to self-destruct mode after a certain time and will not pose a threat to residential communities after the hostilities end.
