Local authorities should choose appropriate methods of admission to grade 6.

Many readers debated heatedly when the Ministry of Education and Training suddenly issued an 'order' to completely stop testing or assessing the ability of students entering grade 6 at special schools.

As Thanh Nien reported, the Ministry of Education and Training's sudden "order" to completely stop the entrance exams or assessment of capacity for grade 6 in special schools not only left schools unable to react, but also made them worried about the situation of "running" for transcripts and awards for admission, which had already happened.

Regarding the recruitment of grade 6 students at some special schools using "competence assessment tests" implemented over the past 7 years, there have been no concerns about any major negative or inadequacies. Therefore, public opinion was really surprised, some said "couldn't handle it" when the regulations on secondary and high school admissions recently issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, secondary school admissions only have one selection method, no more exceptions for special schools. Later, a representative of the Ministry of Education and Training spoke up to explain that in general, the Ministry still allows special secondary schools to combine selection with competency assessment tests to recruit grade 6 students as they have been doing for a long time. The Ministry has also issued a document to the Departments of Education and Training for guidance on implementation.

"Now the children learn so pitiful!"

Many opinions support the "ban" on the 6th grade entrance exam. A reader (BD) with the nickname New Reader commented: "That way, there will no longer be a situation where parents force their children to study haphazardly. Only a few percent of parents force their children to take extra classes to prepare for the exam, but most of them don't want to, don't need to prepare for the exam, don't need to take extra classes."

Sharing the same opinion, BĐ Dang Trung expressed: "Support the idea of not having entrance exams or tests in any form. If any school has more applications (meeting the requirements) than the number of students, then organize a public draw to choose (all students are qualified to study, the lucky ones will get in). Doing it this way also eliminates the situation where parents use money or connections to interfere...".

A player with the nickname A1ZeX said: "Those who are in the next grade should continue studying, wherever they are, they should study at the same school according to their household registration... Eliminating entrance exams for grades 6 and 10 will help students reduce the pressure of studying. Now, it's so heartbreaking for the children to study."

"How can you apply with such excellent transcripts?"

In addition, many opinions disagree with the "ban" on exams or assessment of capacity for entering grade 6 of special schools. Nguyen Tran Huy, a member of the Board of Directors, said: "First of all, we need to consider whether the new regulations of the Ministry will reduce the pressure of extra study for students? Certainly not. To enter high-quality schools, schools will have to set criteria of all 10 points in 5 years of study, must have an English certificate, must win movement awards... Thus, instead of only participating in 1 exam, students must participate in many exams and take extra classes throughout 5 years. Is the admission process fair? If it is drawn by lot as some people have proposed, will it be fair? It is fair because it equalizes the capacity of all students, it holds back schools from having the conditions to develop international integration and must line up to progress together!"

BĐ Cong Khanh commented: "If a special school ABC has the capacity to only accept 150 students, but there are more than 2,000 qualified applications, all with "excellent" transcripts, and everyone has some kind of competition award, then how will the admission be conducted? Therefore, in my opinion, an "entrance" exam is necessary for fair admission, to properly assess students' abilities. But if there is an exam, it will lead to exam preparation, exam preparation centers, extra classes, extra tutoring... This is not a simple problem at all."

"Since it is a special school, the school should have a special admission method that is suitable for the school. In my opinion, the localities (provinces, cities) should decide and be responsible for the most suitable admission plan in their locality. No one understands the locality better than them! So it could be an entrance exam, or it could be a selection test, or a combination of both an entrance exam and a selection test... as long as it is most suitable for their locality," said BĐ Thai Ly.

Why not organize an exam and not divide by region? Only by dividing by region is it fair and transparent.

The school recruits 100 students but has 1,000 applications. Anyone good at it, please show me how to select them. How can we do it without exams but still be fair and transparent?
