Speaking afterward, US President Joe Biden said the NDAA “provides the critical authority we need to build a military that can deter future conflicts and support the service members, spouses and families who carry out that mission every day.”

The bill, for the fiscal year through September 2024, includes $14.7 billion for the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, part of a U.S. effort to boost military capabilities through exercises with regional allies and partners.

While emphasizing the need for comprehensive training and capacity-building programs for Taiwan, the NDAA requires U.S. cooperation in the island's efforts to strengthen its military's cybersecurity efforts.

The bill also gives the green light to Washington's plan to sell three nuclear-powered submarines to Canberra under the Australia-UK-US (AUKUS) trilateral security cooperation agreement.
