The latest storm to hit California last week brought the first heavy snowfall of the winter across eastern New Mexico. The storm is called an "atmospheric river", formed by vast streams of moisture-rich air.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of snow and ice-covered roads as an "atmospheric river" storm heads toward the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma, Fox News reports. A winter storm warning has also been issued for eastern New Mexico, including Roswell.

Meteorologist Jennifer Shoemake at the weather agency in Albuquerque, New Mexico, said Albuquerque had up to 10cm of snow recorded on February 11, with some adjacent mountains having 15cm to 22cm of snow, suitable for skiing activities.

Meanwhile, NWS predicts up to 20cm of snow on February 11 in the city of Lubbock, West Texas.

Previously, "atmospheric river" storms brought intense rainfall and heavy snowfall to the mountains of California. Although such "atmospheric river" storms are not uncommon on the West Coast of the United States, meteorologists say they could become more frequent and more extreme in the coming century if climate change continues to warm the Earth.
