Sharing the joy with GD&TĐ Newspaper, Mr. Ha Huy Phuong - Principal of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted No. 1 (Bac Ninh) said that Ngo Quang Minh, a 12th grade Chemistry major at the school, was one of four Vietnamese students who won a Gold Medal in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2025 held from July 5 to 14 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Notably, with 84.82/100 points, Quang Minh entered the top 7 of the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2025, which is the best individual achievement of the Vietnamese team in recent years.
The achievements of Quang Minh and his friends helped the Vietnamese team rank equal with the Chinese and American teams in terms of the number of Gold Medals. This is also the first time in history that the Vietnamese team won 4 Gold Medals in an ICHO competition held directly.
This year's achievements of the Vietnamese team continue the impressive achievements at IChO competitions in recent years. With a total of 24 contestants participating from 2020 - 2025, the Vietnamese team excellently won 24/24 medals, including 21 Gold Medals and 3 Silver Medals.
In the loving affection of family, teachers, friends, the bright-faced young man Ngo Quang Minh emotionally shared: I thank the care and companionship of uncles, industry leaders, relatives, family and especially the teachers at Bac Ninh High School No. 1 for inspiring and creating the best conditions for me.
The "golden boy" of the Chemistry Olympiad said: He decided to pursue Chemistry since 8th grade, after being exposed to and learning about experiments and color change phenomena through the Internet.
“Chemistry is wonderful. This subject helps us explain the world in a logical and vivid way. From answering simple questions to more complex problems in life, Chemistry is present in everything…”, Quang Minh shared.
The male student also expressed that at Bac Ninh High School No. 1, where the quality of education is good, the learning environment is highly competitive, and the teachers always suggest and promote the special talents of students, Quang Minh has had more opportunities to explore and learn interesting things about Chemistry.
With a passion for research, a high spirit of self-study and a sharp thinking ability, Quang Minh has gradually asserted himself in excellent student competitions at all levels. During his high school years, the male student won the Gold Medal of the Northern Coastal and Delta Olympic (grade 10), and the First Prize of the National Excellent Student (grade 12) in this subject.
When asked if the International Olympic exam is difficult, Quang Minh said it is difficult but interesting. At this year's IChO, the practical part comes first, consisting of 3 questions, followed by the theoretical part with 9 questions. Each part of the exam lasts 5 hours.
“The exam was interesting because it covered many new, close and urgent issues related to life such as environmental issues, technology or applications of chemistry in life such as: seawater desalination, solar energy. The practical exam required candidates to master experimental skills from basic to advanced...” - Quang Minh commented.
Quang Minh emphasized that he did well on the test but did not expect the results to be so impressive. “When I found out the results, I was very happy and touched because all the efforts of the teachers and myself were worthily rewarded,” Minh confided.
Stick with Chemistry
Talking about his excellent student, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Do, homeroom teacher of the 12th grade Chemistry class (Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted No. 1) said that he himself used to be a university lecturer working at the school, so the initial teaching method was for students, so many students could not keep up. But Quang Minh was different, he caught on right away and tried to study well from the beginning of grade 10.
Teacher Do assessed that Quang Minh is a student with good logical thinking, very profound, and grasps problems quickly. However, when he was selected to compete internationally, Quang Minh was somewhat psychological and when he entered the Vietnamese Chemistry team, Quang Minh only ranked 4th among the students competing. However, when he went to the UAE, Quang Minh's exam results far surpassed the scores of the students behind.
“Quang Minh’s Gold Medal is a worthy and proud achievement. At Bac Ninh High School No. 1, teachers discover each student’s strengths and weaknesses so that appropriate educational methods can be developed to maximize their abilities…” - Mr. Do affirmed.
Following his son's every step, Mr. Ngo Duc Thanh, the parent of Ngo Quang Minh, could not hide his emotion: When we heard that our son had won the most prestigious Gold Medal of the competition, the whole family was overwhelmed with emotion. When our son went to the competition, we really wanted him to achieve success, but we did not expect it to be so great and so proud.
“The family’s point of view is to give Quang Minh the freedom to develop according to his wishes. The family will be a strong supporter, supporting him on the long journey ahead…” - Mr. Thanh said.
Sharing his secret to studying Chemistry, Quang Minh said there is nothing too big, the important thing is to have a real passion for this subject. “Focus on listening to lectures and always carefully review the knowledge taught by teachers in class. After each class, practice questions and look up more documents and specialized articles. Especially, when encountering difficult problems, stay calm and do not hesitate to ask for help from teachers and experienced people. When taking exams, always create a comfortable mindset and good health to complete the exam,” Quang Minh said.
Outside of school, Quang Minh always spends time playing sports and having healthy entertainment. He plays some sports such as badminton and swimming. Quang Minh won a Gold Medal in Swimming at a sports competition of Bac Ninh province in 2021.
Quang Minh is currently planning his next step. He said he intends to study abroad to continue developing his abilities in the field he loves. If he studies abroad, the male student plans to take a year off to learn and prepare his application well before applying. "I am very passionate about Chemistry, so I will continue with this field in the future. I hope to become a scientist in Chemistry," Quang Minh confided.
The 57th International Chemistry Olympiad 2025 will be held from July 5 to July 14, 2025 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) with the participation of delegations from 90 countries and territories, with 354 contestants. This is also the first time in history that the Vietnamese team has won 4 Gold Medals in an IChO held live.
With Ngo Quang Minh's achievement, this will be the third year that Bac Ninh High School No. 1 has students winning Gold Medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad: Nguyen Kim Giang (2023), Nguyen Huu Tien Hung (2024), Ngo Quang Minh (2025).
