Mexico responds to US tariffs, calls for dialogue instead of confrontation

(CLO) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she has instructed the Minister of Economy to implement tariff and non-tariff measures to protect national interests, after the US imposed comprehensive tariffs on Mexican goods.

In a post on social network X, Ms. Sheinbaum affirmed that Mexico does not want to confront the US but prioritizes cooperation and dialogue.

She also highlighted the government 's efforts to combat drug trafficking, including seizing 20 million doses of fentanyl and arresting more than 10,000 people involved since she took office last October.

US President Donald Trump previously announced the tariffs in response to Mexico's failure to control the flow of fentanyl into the US, as well as immigration that he said was "out of control".

On February 1, Mr. Trump ordered a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on goods from China, starting February 4, raising the risk of a new trade war that economists say could slow global growth and spark inflation.

Mr. Trump signed three separate executive orders on tariffs, declaring that they would remain in place until the national emergency over fentanyl and illegal immigration into the United States is over.

Responding to concerns from refiners and Midwestern states, Mr. Trump imposed only a 10% tariff on energy products from Canada, while energy imports from Mexico were subject to a 25% tariff.
