On the morning of June 30, Messi had a nightmare reunion with his old team PSG in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup when Inter Miami suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat.
The Argentine striker left PSG in 2023 after two years, because he did not believe they could compete for top European honours. Ironically, PSG then won the Champions League under Luis Enrique (his former coach at Barca) and shed their image as an expensive but underperforming team.
Coach Enrique faced the star quartet he led at Barca: Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. However, Inter Miami was no match for the Champions League champions.
The 38-year-old superstar is now in the twilight of his career and his age has been viciously mocked by fans. In the stands, a group of fans held up a banner depicting the Argentine with a bald head, white beard and missing teeth. And comments on social media were no kinder.

"This match was a ritual to humiliate Messi" - one person wrote on X (Twitter).
"Messi just walks around aimlessly," complained another, while others shared videos of PSG stars Nuno Mendes and Neves easily taking the ball from him.
Another fan commented: "It seems like PSG came here to prove a point - to get back at all the bad words when he left the club. This is personal!".
However, this heavy defeat clearly showed the difference in class between the two teams. In the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup, PSG will have to face Bayern Munich.
