Men men - culinary culture of Mong ethnic group, Ha Giang

HeritageHeritage15/04/2024

Men men - the name sounds a bit strange, but it can be simply understood that men men is a steamed corn flour dish of the Mong people. To make this dish, it requires many steps from drying the corn, grinding it very finely, sifting it carefully and then steaming it. Because no spices are added, when eating, you can feel the sweet, fatty and fragrant taste of corn. The Mong people eat men men with vegetable soup, thang co water or with grilled chili on cold days.
On the Dong Van stone plateau, corn covers the hillsides, growing even in the jagged rocks. The seeds are sown in the ground like seeds of hope, nurtured by the highland rain and wind, and then sprout into resilient corn plants with plump, sweet-smelling kernels. In the past, when life was difficult, men men was the daily "rice" of the Mong people. When life became more prosperous, men men was still indispensable in daily meals, especially on holidays and Tet.
The spirit of men men seems to have permeated deeply into the lives of the Mong people here. A very simple dish, although not a delicacy, but it encapsulates the cultural beauty of the Mong people on the rocky plateau - people who "live in stone, die in stone", resilient but not callous, strong but warm and sincere.
The specialty men men was suggested by Phan Thu Thao to Heritage readers and tourists nationwide in the contest Heritage Guide - Your Guide: "Go to Ha Giang " that the Magazine is organizing.
The contest is taking place until April 28, 2024 on Group The Guide - TIPS HAY DU LICH with many suggestions for interesting and unique experiences in Ha Giang.
