CCTV said more than 180 rescue workers had been dispatched to the scene and search and rescue operations were continuing.

Weather monitoring data showed that Leshan city had been hit by heavy rain for two days before the incident. Sichuan is an area where landslides often occur, with high casualty rates.

In 2017, a landslide from a 3,000-meter-high mountain occurred at 6 a.m. on June 24 in Xinma, Sichuan, China. It created a 2-kilometer-long pile of rocks and soil that blocked a river in the county, burying 62 houses and leaving 120 people missing.
