According to the Phu Yen Department of Construction, National Highway 29 is the main national highway in the Central and Central Highlands regions, with a length of 293km; starting point at Vung Ro port (Phu Yen province); ending point at Dak Rue border gate (Dak Lak province). This is the route connecting the Central Coast region (Phu Yen) with the Central Highlands (Dak Lak); the route connects with the country's key traffic axes and passes through the Nam Phu Yen Economic Zone; connecting seaports, dry ports, airports, railways, and border gates connecting the Cambodia - Laos - Vietnam development triangle area.

Comrade Le Tan Ho, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, requested that the proposed plan must be built on the basis of being suitable to the resources of the central government and the province at the present time. However, the current status of National Highway 29 has many sections with low technical specifications, narrow road surface; the road surface structure is mainly asphalt concrete, invested and put into use for a long time. Along with the socio-economic development, the traffic volume on the route is increasing rapidly; the potential risk of traffic safety loss is high, so it has not met the demand for transporting passengers and large volumes of goods along the East-West economic corridor, from Dak Rue border gate to Vung Ro Port, Bai Goc Port and vice versa.

Realizing the importance of this route, Phu Yen and Dak Lak provinces agreed to coordinate to propose investment in upgrading National Highway 29. In particular, the oriented plan is to invest, upgrade and expand National Highway 29, from Km31+300 (intersection of National Highway 1, Dong Hoa Town to the intersection of National Highway 14 (at Km178+062 Buon Ho Town), with a total route length of 146.76km. The investment scale is a grade III road with a speed of 60-80km/h, 4 lanes; the roadbed is 20.5m wide.

At the meeting, Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Tan Ho emphasized: Investing in and upgrading National Highway 29 is very urgent in the current development trend. However, the proposed plan must be built on the basis of being suitable for the resources of the Central and the province at the present time; suitable for the actual needs of the locality in each stage. Assign the Department of Construction of Phu Yen to coordinate with the Department of Construction of Dak Lak to draft a document to send to ministries and branches on proposing an investment plan to upgrade National Highway 29 to create favorable conditions for people to travel, trade goods, and promote socio-economic development of the two localities.
