Affirming the No. 1 position in high-tech agriculture

Continuing to restructure the agricultural sector towards a multi-sector, sustainable, modern one with high added value and competitiveness; in which focusing on promoting the development of high-tech agriculture will still be the priority of the new Lam Dong province. So, what is the direction for Lam Dong to continue to affirm its number 1 position in the country in this field?

Talking about high-tech agriculture , we can understand it as an agriculture that reasonably applies new and advanced technologies to production to improve efficiency, create breakthroughs in productivity and quality of agricultural products, satisfy the increasing needs of society and ensure sustainable agricultural development.

In 2024, fruit and vegetable exports increased by 19% over the same period.

CURRENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Therefore, to achieve the goal of restructuring the agricultural sector, in recent years, Lam Dong has been effectively implementing agricultural development projects; building and developing specialized areas for high-quality, large-scale agricultural production that meet common food safety standards associated with post-harvest processing and preservation industries and targeting export markets.

According to incomplete statistics, Lam Dong currently has 208 seedling production facilities and produces about 10.59 million seedlings annually. In addition, with a system of 82 hectares of primary orchards producing 39 varieties of industrial and fruit trees, supplying over 11 million seedlings annually. In the tissue culture sector alone, there are currently 56 facilities, producing 72.3 million vegetable and flower seedlings annually, of which about 35 million are supplied to markets outside the province and exported. With the scale and output of seedlings mentioned above, it shows that Lam Dong's industrial foundation for plant seed production ranks first in the country.

Besides, by focusing on promoting the development of high-tech agriculture, smart agriculture and organic agriculture in response to climate change, Lam Dong has also achieved outstanding achievements.

The evidence is that, in the Southern Central Highlands (former Lam Dong province), up to now, the area of high-tech agricultural production has reached 69,637 hectares, accounting for over 21.2% of the annual agricultural cultivation area. Of which, 600 hectares apply smart technology, 15,000 hectares produce safe products and 2,000 hectares produce organic agricultural products... In addition, there are currently 1,600 enterprises operating in the agricultural sector and 500 agricultural cooperatives with 80% of cooperatives operating effectively, achieving revenue of 2 billion VND/year or more. At the same time, 8 high-tech agricultural production areas and 14 high-tech agricultural enterprises have been established and recognized.

Similarly, the semi-highland basalt red soil ecological area (formerly Dak Nong province) also forms 130 types of crops and livestock in the direction of commodities, linking value-added chains. At the same time, 7 high-tech agricultural production zones will be developed and by 2030, 25 concentrated production zones, applying high technology with an area of 10,000 hectares, including 18 crop growing zones...

As for the South Central Coast agro-ecological zone (formerly Binh Thuan province), agricultural production areas have also been formed in the direction of applying high technology. Thereby, over 27,200 hectares of crops apply advanced irrigation methods, saving water; of which production in greenhouses, net houses combined with water-saving irrigation systems, applying automatic water-saving irrigation systems... nearly 4,000 hectares. In addition, there are more than 42,000 hectares of rice applying advanced, water-saving farming methods; especially over 9,000 hectares of dragon fruit cultivated according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP and organic safety standards...

CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT

With the above data, it can be affirmed that Lam Dong agriculture, whose most outstanding achievement is the development of production in the direction of high-tech agriculture mentioned above, continues to be the "pillar" of the economy.

According to Dr. Pham Hong Thai - Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, currently the country has 12 high-tech agricultural zones recognized by localities, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) recognizes 51 high-tech agricultural zones. The locality with the highest number of high-tech agricultural cooperatives in the country is Lam Dong with 36 communes. It is known that applied advances in science and technology have contributed over 30% of added value in agricultural production, 30% in plant variety production.

It should also be added that Lam Dong today has a natural area of 24,235 km2 , 2.5 times larger than Lam Dong province (old), stretching from an altitude of over 1,600 m to the sea of Phu Quy Special Zone. Therefore, Lam Dong is currently not only the largest in the country, but also a new entity with a special structure: Multi-regional. The multi-regional factor in natural geography creates a vast Lam Dong agricultural picture with diverse agricultural production ecological zones and different characteristics. That also poses the problem of developing high-tech agriculture in the coming time with many synchronous solutions from cultivation, pest management to post-harvest technology...

However, the first solution must start with the planning of the growing area. And according to Dr. Pham Hong Thai, it is necessary to form a "high-tech agricultural area in the South Central Highlands - South Central region". Only then can Lam Dong continue to affirm its position as the number 1 in the application of high technology in the country. That is a temperate ecological area specializing in the production of vegetables, flowers, strawberries, tea, coffee, medicinal plants, cold-water fish, high-quality dairy cows; a semi-highland basalt red soil area specializing in the production of coffee, pepper, organic rice, fruit trees...; arid coastal areas producing dragon fruit, grapes, apples, asparagus, melons... At the same time, build an inter-regional processing ecosystem, especially forming agricultural processing centers in clusters.

Finally, "Lam Dong needs to take advantage of its unique terrain and climate to develop a diverse, regionally complementary agriculture, without competing within the region," emphasized Dr. Pham Hong Thai.
