Overcoming seasonality in tourism activities in the North Central Coast region

Báo Nhân dânBáo Nhân dân24/09/2024

The workshop was organized by the Institute for Tourism Development Research (Vietnam National Administration of Tourism) in both in-person and online formats, attracting the participation of representatives of local tourism management agencies, many tourism research experts and tourism businesses.

Presenting a summary of the research report on seasonality in tourism development in the North Central Coast region, Master Hoang Dao Bao Cam (Institute for Tourism Development Research), Project Manager, said: The nature of seasonality in tourism is the imbalance of time and space in tourism activities, caused by natural and social factors. This leads to large fluctuations in demand and service supply, creating challenges for the tourism industry in maintaining stable visitor numbers and revenue throughout the year.

“Seasonality brings high concentration of tourists in a certain period of time for means of transport, causing traffic jams at tourist destinations, losing convenience in the process of moving, staying and reducing service quality, creating environmental pressure on tourism resources” - Master Hoang Dao Bao Cam said.

According to the task research team, the seasonality in tourism activities is very evident in the North Central region. In recent years, tourism in the North Central region has had certain developments, but the tourism business results of the provinces in the region are still not commensurate with their potential. The main products are currently still mainly developed seasonally, are still small-scale, fragmented, lack close links between localities and lack the necessary connections between tourist destinations.

This situation requires focusing on expanding tourism space, especially product lines that can be exploited year-round, helping to overcome tourism seasonality.

At the Workshop, based on the assessment of the current status of seasonal tourism activities in the North Central region and analysis of solutions being applied by some localities, experts proposed many solutions to diversify tourism products based on the combined strengths of natural and human resources here.

In particular, focusing on a number of solutions such as: promoting the development of product lines that can be exploited all year round such as: festival tourism; MICE tourism; entertainment, sports tourism, health care tourism, cultural tourism, spiritual tourism; building flexible pricing policies and product packages for each customer group in the low season; Increasing support for the development of community tourism due to the high adaptability of this model to seasonality...

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan spoke at the Workshop.

In his concluding remarks at the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Director of the Institute for Tourism Development Research, said: In addition to marine resources, the North Central region also has many valuable natural and cultural heritages that can be developed into tourism products to help overcome seasonality. The important issue is how to develop products to meet the needs and tastes of tourists.

It is a fact that for a long time, localities have focused on organizing many events in the peak tourist season, leading to the risk of overloading visitors and putting pressure on infrastructure and the tourism environment, while resources should be devoted to organizing events and activities in the low season to attract visitors. Therefore, according to Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, it is necessary to change the habit of doing tourism in this style, it is necessary to spread out the events to attract tourists all year round. In addition, it is also necessary to increase the connectivity between coastal-mountainous-plain areas in building tourist itineraries for visitors to diversify products and enrich the experience of visitors.

According to the Director of the Institute for Tourism Development Research, product solutions also need to be accompanied by solutions on mechanisms, policies, infrastructure planning, investment, product promotion, destinations, etc. to truly overcome seasonality in tourism activities.
